Despite the blue-green algae bloom in one corner of the lake, Ian & Janice ventured out to Elk Lake on a lovely Sunday in October to practice self-rescues. Being able to confidently re-enter a boat in deep water is an important skill. While the water wasn’t too cold (about 14 C) wetsuits were worn to allow more practice. At least half a dozen times each slipped out of a C1x and re-entered the boat from both sides and from the stern. Coming over the stern was definitely the more challenging choice as one has to negotiate the wing rigger cross member.
The greater stability of the boat helped us to get back in without having a hand on both oar handles at all times, though the greater width of the boat and thus distance to haul oneself up may have contributed to some bruised ribs in the days that followed. It was a great opportunity to go through steps in a controlled environment, though not representative of conditions that might see one getting tossed from a boat! While it was surprisingly easy to get back into the boat, to build additional confidence, it will be important to practice in rougher conditions.
