Pink Power!

Sunday marked the third Race Around the Rock regatta put on by the Salt Spring Island Rowing Club. There were 61 participants in all with some coming from as far away as Washington,DC. OARCA joined in with an all women’s crew. The “Pink Power” Team of 10 was made up with members of OARCA, the Gorge Rowing Club, the Maple Bay Rowing Club and the Victoria City Rowing Club. A great day with a great group of women.

We were lucky with the weather. Lots of rain on Saturday but the sun came out on Sunday. A gorgeous trip up the west side of Salt Spring Island with minimal wind and just a little swirling from the current.

Beautiful conditions just before the north end of Salt Spring.

As we rounded the northern tip of Salt Spring, we encountered a very confused sea state. Our lovely, calm water was just a memory. Conditions got worst as we headed down the east side of the island. Lots of waves and white caps. Waves were crashing into the boat and over the bow. Made for some exciting rodeo rowing. In other words, real coastal rowing conditions! Fortunately the winds calmed down for the crew after Fernwood Beach and so were able to complete the event with only sore bodies as the main handicap.

All in all it was a wonderful event and many thanks to all the hard work done the Salt Spring Island Rowing Club for putting it together. There was even a “boat watching” event put on by two of the restaurants at Fernwood Beach.

Notice in the local paper about the event at Fernwood.
