June 8th, 2025 at Tulista Park in Sidney, B.C.

The weather couldn’t have been better. The sun was shining and the waters calm. We had originally expected around 10 participants, but ended up with close to 60. A great turnout!

We were fortunate to have Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) join us an bring along the amazing photographer Kevin Light to take photos. All the photos on this page are thanks to Kevin and supported by RCA.

We set up on the beach next to the Tulista boat ramp, and had lots of great volunteers helping with the morning. We couldn’t have survived without them.

Then it was time to get our “come triers” into boats. We used both our coastal coxed quads as well as our coastal doubles. We put an experience coach as the cox in the quads and one in the double to help the new rowers. The important thing was to make sure our new rowers learned some basics and had fun! After their row, each new rower was awarded with an Orca cookie medal. Very few medals survived beyond the presentation.

All in all a great day. So wonderful to see people having fun and enjoying being in a boat. Quite a few have signed up to take Learn to Row lessons, so that is even better. We look forward to sharing our love of rowing with them.
